Kenyan leaders mourn Mama Lucy Kibaki

Mama Lucy Kibaki, who died on Tuesday, will be remembered for her immense contributions to the country's development, President Uhuru Kenyatta has said.
Uhuru and DP William Ruto led several leaders and the public in mourning Lucy, who was the wife of former President Mwai Kibaki.
She died aged 76 at Bupa Cromwell Hospital in London after being ill for about a month.

"Especially notable were her Excellency's virtues of leadership and
commitment to improving the well-being of ordinary Kenyans. Her focus on tackling HIV/Aids in particular will remain an inspiration to many," Uhuru said.
In a message via Twitter, Ruto expressed deep sorrow upon learning of the former First Lady's death.
Amani leader Musalia Mudavadi said Lucy stood by her husband through adversities and never let go of the maternal instinct to protect her family.
"Some may have been uncomfortable with her 'iron lady' status but she carried with her the motto that behind a successful man, there is always an unapologetic woman," he said.
Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero said Mama Lucy will be remembered for her "unwavering commitment to reality and truth".
Kidero said she will also be remembered for efforts against the HIV/Aids pandemic and Mama Lucy KIbaki Hospital in Kayole.
"The news of the passing of Her Excellency - a wife, mother, sister and grandmother to many - has stunned my entire family and Nairobi residents," he said.
He sent condolences on behalf of his wife Susan and residents of Nairobi, "particularly the women and mothers who Mama Lucy engaged and worked with passionately and tirelessly".
Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko said: "At least we honoured her in life by naming a hospital after her. What the county government of Nairobi needs to do is improve the conditions at the hospital in her honour."
"She was the mother of the nation and we need to honour her even in death."
National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi said the whole country mourns Lucy.
"The loss of Lucy Kibaki is a big one [at a time] when the country needs people who can stand for it," he said.

Nominated Senator Beatrice Elachi eulogised Lucy as an "adorable" public figure, saying everybody wanted to hear her speak.
"She was frank and fearless. She spoke the truth and did not know how to hide anything. That is what we need from public servants," she said.

Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho said Lucy "relentlessly championed" women's rights and promoted healthcare.

Chief Justice Willy Mutunga shared on Twitter a message that translates to: "We surely belong to Allah and to Him we shall return. RIP..."

Others who wished the family well were Nominated MP Johnson Sakaja, National Assembly Majority leader Aden Duale and Homa Bay woman representative Gladys Wanga.
