Chelsea are reported to have agreed a deal with Juventus for the transfer of coveted midfielder Paul Pogba, with the Premier League champions set to pay a British record fee to secure the acquisition of the young Frenchman.
Pogba has established himself as arguably the most in-demand player in world football, being linked with a plethora of clubs since his breakthrough at Juventus, where he moved from Manchester United.
It is claimed by The Sun that Chelsea have emerged as the victors in pursuit of Pogba and a deal is in place to bring
the 22-year-old to Stamford Bridge before the close of the summer transfer window.
The agreement is reportedly worth a staggering £69 million, which would surpass the £59.7 million Manchester United paid to sign Angel di Maria from Real Madrid at the same point last year.
However, it could be that Chelsea recruit Pogba in on a part exchange basis, meaning the deal would fall below the Di Maria benchmark. Oscar, Willian and Juan Cuadrado could be used as makeweights, the report on Saturday adds.
If Chelsea were able to pull this off, it really would be a quite stunning move. For some time it had appeared that Barcelona and Real Madrid were the leading contenders, with Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho content with his current midfield options.
However, a poor start to their title defence may have encouraged Mourinho to really act decisively in the transfer market. Pedro, who had appeared set to join Manchester United, has signed since the defeat to Manchester City, and Pogba could be next.
It had seemed that Chelsea would conduct little business in this window but, by the time it has ended, they could have enjoyed the best of it by some distance…yet again.
